Safari Ball - The Story of Nincada

Beneath the roots of towering forest trees, where sunlight barely touches the soil, something waits. Not in fear. Just waiting. Nincada, a Bug/Ground-type Pokémon, lives in silence for years, hidden from the world above. Its story isn’t just about growing stronger but about what happens when patience finally breaks into change and how sometimes, growth creates more than one path forward.
Nincada

"It makes its nest at the roots of a mighty tree. Using its whiskerlike antennae, it probes its surroundings in the pitch-black darkness of soil."
—Pokémon Emerald
Deep underground, Nincada moves slowly through packed soil, carving quiet tunnels along tree roots. It feeds gently, drawing moisture and nutrients from the earth, never asking for more than it needs. According to the Pokémon Ruby Pokédex, “Nincada lives underground for many years in complete darkness. It stays motionless as it waits for evolution.” And in Pokémon Sapphire, we learn "Nincada lives underground. It uses its sharp claws to carve the roots of trees and absorb moisture and nutrients. This Pokémon can't withstand bright sunlight so avoids it."
Nincada’s world is built on stillness. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t compete. It simply endures.
Its Compound Eyes ability reflects a deeper kind of awareness. Awareness not of sight, but perception. In total darkness, Nincada becomes highly attuned to subtle shifts like vibrations in the soil, the movement of roots, the faint presence of life nearby. As described in Pokémon FireRed, “Because it lived almost entirely underground, it is nearly blind. It uses its antennae instead.” This suggests that Nincada doesn’t just react to the world, it anticipates it. Over years underground, it may not see its evolution coming in a visual sense, but it likely feels it approaching like pressure building beneath the surface.
Meanwhile, Run Away reflects its instinct for survival. It represents knowing when to stay hidden and when to withdraw before danger fully arrives.
Emotionally, Nincada represents a season of life where growth happens unseen. Like studying for years, healing in private, or quietly preparing for a moment you can’t fully imagine yet. It doesn’t know exactly what it will become but it trusts that something is coming.
And when that moment arrives, it won’t be small.
Ninjask

"Ninjask moves around at such a high speed that it cannot be seen, even while its crying can be clearly heard. For that reason, this Pokémon was long believed to be invisible."
—Pokémon Ruby
Then suddenly, everything changes.
When Nincada evolves, it bursts from the ground into the open air as Ninjask, gaining the Flying-type and with it, speed, motion, and overwhelming presence. What once lived in silence now moves so fast it can barely be seen.
The Pokémon Ruby Pokédex says, “Ninjask moves around at such a high speed that it cannot be seen. This Pokémon was long believed to be invisible.” And Pokémon Emerald adds, “Because it darts about vigorously at high speed, it is very difficult to see.”
This transformation isn’t gradual. The change is explosive.
After years of stillness, Ninjask moves like it’s making up for lost time. There’s an urgency to it, an excitement, almost like it’s experiencing the world all at once. Light, sound, movement, everything Nincada never had. Its Speed Boost ability reflects this emotional momentum, growing faster with every passing moment, as if it doesn’t want to slow down long enough to lose what it’s finally gained.
And yet, this speed is also a form of escape.
Ninjask doesn’t just move fast, it avoids. According to Pokémon FireRed, “This Pokémon is so quick, it is said to be able to avoid any attack. It loves to feed on tree sap.” Its Infiltrator ability allows it to pass through barriers, suggesting that Ninjask doesn’t engage with obstacles, it bypasses them entirely. Emotionally, this can reflect someone who, after being quiet and hidden for so long, avoids being held down again. It escapes expectations, pressure, even connection if it feels limiting.
But freedom without grounding can become overwhelming.
The Pokémon Sapphire Pokédex warns, “If Ninjask is not trained properly, it will refuse to obey the Trainer and cry loudly continuously. Because of this quality, this Pokémon is said to be one that puts the Trainer's abilities to the test.” This reveals something deeply human. When someone spends years unseen or unheard, sudden freedom can feel too big to manage. Without guidance, structure, or support, that energy can turn into resistance, noise, or even defiance.
Its cry, described in Pokémon HeartGold as something that “leaves a lasting headache if heard for too long,” reflects this overload. It’s not just sound, it’s everything it’s been holding in, released all at once.
We’ve seen this before in real life.
A quiet student who suddenly finds their voice and talks nonstop. Someone who leaves a restrictive environment and dives into every opportunity at once. That burst of expression is real but it can also be chaotic.
Ninjask shows us that transformation isn’t just about becoming free, it’s about learning how to handle that freedom.
And as it speeds forward, leaving its past behind, something else remains.
Shedinja

"Shedinja is a peculiar Pokémon. It seems to appear unsought in a Poké Ball after a Nincada evolves. This bizarre Pokémon is entirely immobile - it doesn't even breathe."
—Pokémon Sapphire
When Nincada evolves, it doesn’t just become Ninjask. It leaves something behind.
That something becomes Shedinja, a Bug/Ghost-type Pokémon, a hollow shell that lingers where Nincada once was.
The Pokémon Ruby Pokédex describes it as “Shedinja's hard body doesn't move - not even a twitch. In fact, its body appears to be merely a hollow shell. It is believed that this Pokémon will steal the spirit of anyone peering into its hollow body from its back.” And in Pokémon Emerald we discover, “A peculiar Pokémon that floats in air even though its wings remain completely still. The inside of its body is hollow and utterly dark."
Shedinja is not growth. Shedinja is what was shed.
It represents the version of Nincada that could not come forward. The stillness. The emptiness. The parts that didn’t transform.
Its Wonder Guard ability reflects this in a powerful way. Only what truly reaches it can affect it, everything else passes through. Emotionally, this can represent someone who has become so closed off or protected that only the deepest, most direct experiences can touch them.
But it also raises a deeper question. What did Nincada leave behind to become Ninjask?
Perhaps Shedinja is the weight of those quiet years. The isolation. The identity built in darkness that no longer fits in the light.
In everyday life, this can look like someone who reinvents themselves becoming outgoing, confident, and fast-moving, while a quieter, more uncertain version of themselves still lingers beneath the surface. Not gone. Just separated.
Shedinja doesn’t chase. It doesn’t grow. It simply remains. A reminder that not every part of us moves forward at the same time.

Nincada’s evolution is one of the most unique in the Pokémon world. It doesn’t just grow, it divides. One path becomes movement, speed, and overwhelming change, while the other becomes stillness, mystery, and what remains. This dual evolution reflects a deeper truth about growth. We don’t just become someone new, we also leave parts of ourselves behind. Some parts adapt and thrive in the light, while others stay rooted in where we came from.
Nincada’s story reminds us that growth begins quietly, often in places no one else can see. When change finally comes, it can feel sudden, overwhelming, and even dividing, pulling us into who we are becoming while asking us to release what no longer fits. Ninjask shows the excitement and chaos of stepping into the world, while Shedinja reflects the stillness of what we didn’t bring with us.
And maybe, like Nincada, the most important changes in our lives are the ones that happen long before anyone else notices.
